What Is Base64 Encoding?
Base64 encoding is a method of converting binary data or text into a string of 64 commonly used characters. It represents data using uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, +, /, and = as padding.
Base64 is commonly used when binary data needs to be represented safely as text, such as in APIs, email attachments, HTML, CSS, and data URLs.
What Is Base64 Encode?
Base64 encode means converting an input value into its Base64 representation. Base64 encoding does not encrypt the original data. Anyone can decode a Base64 string back into its original form, so it should not be used to protect passwords or sensitive information.
How Does Base64 Encoding Work?
Base64 converts input data into groups of 8-bit bytes, then represents those bits using 6-bit values. Each 6-bit value maps to one character in the Base64 character set.
For example:
Input: Hello
Output: SGVsbG8=
The = character is padding added when necessary to make the encoded output fit the required length.
How to Encode Base64?
You can encode text to Base64 using an online Base64 encoder:
Enter or paste your text.
The encoder converts the input into bytes.
Those bytes are represented using Base64 characters.
Copy the resulting Base64 string.
Base64 Encoding Example
Input: Hello World!
output: SGVsbG8gV29ybGQh
