What Is a Database Seed Script Generator?
A Database Seed Script Generator converts sample data into SQL statements that can populate a database table. It is useful for creating test data, development databases, staging environments, demos, and repeatable database setup scripts. The tool supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, and SQL Server.
How to Use the Database Seed Script Generator
Enter the Table Name: Add the destination database table where the seed data will be inserted.
Choose the SQL Dialect: Select MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, or SQL Server.
Set Rows Per INSERT: Choose how many rows should be included in each generated INSERT statement.
Choose the Data Format: Select JSON or CSV based on the sample data you want to provide.
Enter Sample Data: Paste your JSON or CSV data into the input area.
Load an Example: Click Load Example to populate the tool with sample data.
Clear the Data: Use Clear to remove the current input.
Configure Generation Options: Enable Include column names, Convert empty values to NULL, or Include SQL comments as needed.
Choose Duplicate Handling: Select Standard INSERT, Ignore duplicates, or Replace existing rows.
Generate Seed SQL: Click Generate Seed SQL to create the SQL seed script.
Copy or Download: Use Copy to reuse the generated SQL or Download .sql to save the seed script.
Database Seed Script Example
Input:
Suppose your table is named users and your sample JSON is:
[
{
"name": "John",
"email": "john@example.com",
"age": 28
},
{
"name": "Sarah",
"email": "sarah@example.com",
"age": 31
}
]
The generated SQL can follow this structure:
INSERT INTO users (name, email, age)
VALUES
('John', 'john@example.com', 28),
('Sarah', 'sarah@example.com', 31);
The exact generated SQL depends on your selected SQL dialect and generation options.
JSON vs CSV Seed Data
JSON
JSON is useful when your sample data is already structured as objects and key-value pairs:
[
{"name": "John", "age": 28},
{"name": "Sarah", "age": 31}
]
CSV
CSV works well for tabular sample dat
name,age
John,28
Sarah,31
Duplicate Handling Options
The generator provides three duplicate-handling choices:
Standard INSERT — generates regular SQL insert statements.
Ignore duplicates — generates SQL intended to avoid inserting conflicting duplicate records where supported by the selected dialect.
Replace existing rows — generates an appropriate replacement strategy where supported by the selected database system.
Because duplicate-handling syntax differs between database engines, review the generated SQL before running it against a production database.
Why Use a Database Seed Script Generator?
Convert JSON or CSV data into SQL
Generate multiple INSERT rows efficiently
Support major SQL dialects
Include column names automatically
Convert empty values to NULL
Add SQL comments when needed
Configure duplicate handling
Copy generated SQL instantly
Download seed scripts as .sql files
